Chapter 5: From Head to Toe - Part 2

Treasure your Nails

I once met a dermatologist who scolds patients who have the habit of growing their nails long.  Really, it is all about being hygiene.  Think about it, while asleep, you will inadvertently scratch your face when itchy or sweep off your hair covering your face.  These actions ferry germs underneath your nails onto your face, thus causing pimples.  Worst, it can aggravate the situation if you already have a face full of pimples.  Hence for the sake of your skin, don’t grow your nails long!  I myself have the habit of sub-consciously scratching my neck while asleep; hence I prefer to keep my nails short.  So how should we cut and maintain the health of our nails?

Tip 1:  Apply a base coat before nail polish
Any type is fine, be it a thickening or strengthening coat.  With the base coat underneath, you will find it easier when removing the nail polish and nails won’t turn yellow or chip easily.

Tip 2:  Trim cuticles
The thick skin surrounding your nails must be removed.  After shower or soaking your hands/feet in warm water, use a cuticle file (甲硬皮) to file away the dead skin.  The cuticle file is not as rough as a nail file, hence is designed to remove thick cuticles.  Never use a scissors to cut the skin to avoid cutting into the flesh and even if you’re careful, the new skin growing will be uneven.

Tip 3:  Hand lotion
I recommended Neutrogena hand cream (露得清护手霜).  Besides the hands, it protects the nails too, maintaining the health of both.  Applying hand lotion is not as simple as just rubbing it onto the hands; your fingers also must be carefully massaged one by one, tip by tip.

Tip 4:  Nail thickening coat
This is effective for those who suffer from chipping nails.  L’OREAL has such products.

Tip 5:  Cutting your nails
While cutting your nails, neither should you use too much force nor cut too deep.  Leave a white bit of nail is enough to look pretty.  File the nails into shape.

Tip 6:  Let your nails rest
Leonardo DiCaprio once commented during an interview that he doesn’t like girls with polished nails that are flaking.  Most nail polish in general will flake 3 days after application.  This is the best time to remove the polish, and at the same time, allow your nails to breathe.  During this time, you can apply a thickening or strengthening coat to give your nails a nice shiny look while maintaining their health.

Tip 7:  Think twice before getting crystallized nails (水晶指甲)
This is done by covering the nails with a mixture of crystal powder and chemicals.  After it hardens, the excess nail is trimmed off.  This is a time-consuming process.  Crystallized nails appear shiny and hard, you can even shape them anyway you like.  They are very firm and look beautiful with any nail polish color.  Girls with small nails don’t look good with nail polish hence they will go for crystallized nails.  However you must get weekly touch-ups for back of the nail that grows out.  When your crystallized nails are removed after a month or two, you will notice your nails have become thin, soft and chip easily.  From my past experience, it took me 6 months for them to recover!

I recommend Sally Hansen’s nail care range.  It offers different products to target soft and chipping nails, weak nails, yellow nails, etc.

Underarms must be Hair Free!

How terribly embarrassing is that when a beauty raises her arms to show off unsightly armpit hairs.  Julia Roberts did once and became the nation’s laughing stock.  Plucking armpit hairs is a painful process but in order to be beauty perfect, this pain has to be endured!  Good news is that armpit hairs, unlike facial hairs are less sensitive so after plucking one or two times, the pain lessens.  I suggest all to use tweezers to do the job, but if your armpits are the extremely hairy type, or you’re a first timer, it is better to do it in 2 or 3 separate sessions.

The method of plucking armpit hairs is similar to that for plucking eyebrow hairs – pluck it from the root!  Apply Mentholatum ointment (面速力 ) after that to soothe the skin.  I advise those whose armpits with pores that look like goose bumps, don’t pluck as it will cause skin inflammation.  Try laser removal.  There are many hair removal products you can use.  I have no recommendation for a brand because the disadvantage of using them is quicker hair re-growth which is thick and stubby.  Also, girls afraid of pain resort to shaving which I think is even worst.  After shaving, re-growth is quick and shaving inflicts cuts easily.

Plucking is a tiring process, requiring you to bend down your head to look at the armpit, hence getting sore neck.  I advise everyone to do it with the help of a mirror!

Be Yourself, have Your Own Style

You are a beauty if you have your own style.  For example some girls have their own dress sense, be it quirky, weird, unique or simply unusual, these girls leave a deep impression in others.  They usually maintain themselves well too, from skin pores, nails, hair hygiene to overall well-being, you can tell that they have put in the effort.  I have deep admiration for such girls.  I believe that no matter what they do in life, they do it with success.  Similarly for students, especially in this era when being trendy is the ‘IN’ thing, they need to identify their unique style and have fashion sense.  If a youngster is able to dress well, I will feel that this person has high aesthetic standards and will be outstanding in life!

There are young people who dress blindly.  Not only do they have very poor fashion sense, they lack self grooming skills too.  Their nails are filthy and they don’t bother to keep themselves clean.  I find such people scary!

I believe that as long as you have your own style that suits your personality, you can stand out from the rest even without the help of branded clothes and stuff!

As for guys, do they need to be concerned about cosmetology?  It depends on their job requirements.  Statistics show the number of men going for plastic surgery is on the rise, and they usually do it for the sake of their careers.  The first type is those working in the service or management industry, where physical appearance is extremely important.  They’re usually most concerned about getting rid of wrinkles.  The second type is those in showbiz.  Most of them usually go for teeth and double eyelid surgeries.

It is not a sin to be beautiful, whether you are a man or woman.  Just strive for it!  I personally feel that skincare for guys is very important, no matter how old you are or what you do.  Cleansing is No. 1 priority.  Guys don’t need to do so much as us girls.  Exfoliate once weekly to achieve clearer skin is sufficient.

At fashion parties I attend occasionally, I notice some socialites who are dressed to the nines, wearing expensive outfits and thick makeup.  Unfortunately, the flesh on their bodies look loose and baggy, the skin on their faces has thick layers of stratum corneum (质层).  These imperfections cost them lots of points in their appearances!

The Secret to Electrifying Smoldering Eyes

I spent a lot of time perfecting my made-up look.  When I first entered showbiz, all female artistes wore the same look – smoldering eyes, perfectly arched eyebrows finished off with bright red or dark brown lipstick.  I followed their style but found myself very ugly, totally not me!  My eyes looked swollen!  In the end, I experimented with various looks on my eyes and with each unsuccessful try, I was brought closer to the look I was waiting for – I realized that a natural look suits me best!

Some time later when the Korean craze swept through Taiwan, I observed the faces of Korean actresses and realized that they love using liquid eyeliner and falsies.  Their faces may be lightly made up but the eyeliner must be drawn perfectly black and fine, and eyes must have falsies.  However I was unable to master the art of applying liquid eyeliner perfectly hence gave up totally!  And I don’t use falsies; I hate the idea of getting my lashes pulled out when removing them!  That said, the best way to brightened eyes is simply by applying a thick coat of mascara coupled with fine eyeliner.

Tip 1:  Use only black mascara
My favorite brands are Maybelline and Lancome.  I choose Dark Black which is the darkest black available in most brands.  Our Asian eyes are black in color hence look the best with black mascara, eyes look brighter too.  If you are a westerner with blue, green or brown colored eyes, then mascaras in other colors are suitable for you!

Tip 2:  Brush to achieve thick and firm layers
I love applying mascara as exaggeratedly thick as possible.  Its effect on my eyes is absolutely great!  However please note the correct way of application is to first brush on a layer, then use an eyelash comb to gently separate the lashes evenly out and finally brush on a second layer again.  You can even try using 2 different brands of mascara to apply 4 or 5 coats to achieve heavily thick eyelashes!

Tip 3:  Use water-proof mascara
To avoid mascara smearing due to tears, rain or perspiration, use one that is water-proof.  The disadvantage of water-proof mascara is that it is tougher to remove.  You have to be more diligent then.

Tip 4:  Be careful with eyelash extensions
I had tried it once.  Strands of fake lashes are glued onto the lash roots one by one.  Depending on the strength of the glue, they can last for about a month maximum but in most cases, they will drop off in a week’s time.  However be wary of a serious side effect – which is your real lashes may drop off together with the fakes!  If you’re planning to DIY, you can buy the long-lasting glue at MAKE UP FOREVER.  But because eyelash extension is a tediously long process, you must blow dry immediately each time a lash is glued otherwise the glue will irritate your eyes and make them tear.  Don’t use too much glue!
