Chapter 3: All about the Face - Part 3

Facial Cleansing Products adored by Barbie Hsu

I once read a report that says it is not necessary to use a toner if you don’t have large pores.  But I suggest otherwise!  After years of experiencing with different beauty products, the following are my recommended ones.  They don’t have to be expensive to be good, as long as I feel comfortable using them and they are easily absorbed into the skin.  You can try these:

1) DR.WU Intensive Whitening Serum
Applying toner is no doubt the first step in your skincare routine.  Next you can just apply an essence alone or if you feel that’s not enough, you can apply moisturizer after that.  I feel that essence is a great invention.  It gets absorbed easily and isn’t greasy.  Both types of brightening and hydrating essence are equally useful!  I recommend DR.WU intensive whitening serum, but it can only be used at night.

 2) Shiseido UV Whitening Night Essence
Applying this produces a cooling effect and it gets absorbed extremely easily!

3) Shiseido UV White Purify Cleansing Foam
Using this to wash face produces a cooling effect too!

4) KOSE’s Cosme Decorte range
If you have sensitive skin, regardless of what skincare you use, you will still get granulation tissue (肉芽), red spots or simply itchy and prickly skin.  Suggest you to use KOSE’s Cosme Decorte range which is specially formulated for sensitive skin.  It includes essence, day moisturizer, night moisturizer, eye cream and cleansing milk.  They’re both effective and gentle!

Goodbye Panda Eyes!

Lots of people don’t know what the cause of dark eye circles is.  Usually people with sensitive nose, improper sleeping habits, insomnia or late-nighters often suffer from dark eye circles.  The best cure is beauty sleep (not useful for those with sensitive nose).  Beauty sleep hours are from 11pm till 3pm.  Do this for a week and your dark eye circles will miraculously disappear.  Same for treating puffy eyes!  If you’re unable to get beauty sleep, apply facial mask instead.  However it’s not as effective as effect is temporary.  Beauty sleep is still the best.

There is also this weird method of getting bee stings to diminish dark eye circles.  However with no scientific proof, I don’t know if it’s true.  I don’t even dare to try it!

I have tried IPL, although it was more effective than eye mask or cream, it didn’t remove dark eye circles totally.

There is a Japan imported brand MTM eye mask which I have tried and found it’s not bad.  It even removed fine lines surrounding the eyes.  Alternatively, La Prairie eye gelatin is great too.  However gelatin can agitate sensitive skin compared to emulsion and cream.  Hence use this carefully if you have sensitive skin.

Crow’s Feet around Eye Areas

Honestly, some people do look attractive with a bit of crow’s feet showing up when they smile.  However for fine lines that crawl underneath the eyes, they need to be taken good care of.

Tip 1:  Treat them gently
Never rub your eyes that will harm your delicate skin!  When applying eye makeup on the lower eyelid, don’t use fingers to forcefully pull it down.  Use a powder puff to gently press it down instead.

Tip 2:  Wash face with cold water
No matter how cold the weather is, use cold water every time you wash your face.  This prevents fine lines from forming on the whole face.  Not only this, cold water minimizes your pores and makes your skin fairer too!

Tip 3:  Eye cream and mask
Apply eye cream every day and night, eye mask twice a week.  If you have no fine lines, eye mask once weekly or fortnightly is OK!  Starting from the top of the upper lid, move your ring finger anti-clockwise in circular movements, slowly and gently.  In addition, I recommend DR WU Intensive Anti aging Serum (英爵所抗老精).  It was formulated for the face but I use it on my eyes with very good results at diminishing my fine lines.  Put serum onto thumb pad, rub gently to produce heat (to facilitate absorption) and gently apply onto eyelids.

Tip 4:  Avoid UV rays
Wear sunglasses whenever you go out on a hot day.  UV rays can cause spots, darken skin, and fine lines.

Do not use the same brand of skincare forever; neither should we keep changing brands quickly.  If a particular brand is good for your skin, usually when using into the 2nd bottle, your skin will develop resistance to the product and the effects won’t be as good as before.  Hence, it is advisable to change product once you reach the 3rd bottle!

Magic Dewy Moisturized Tender Lips

Whether you’re a man or woman, having a pair of dewy tender lips sure make you look sexy!

For naturally dark colored lips, I suggest using lip-gloss to lighten up your lips, instead of a lipstick.  The lip-gloss color mustn’t be too bright.  For a natural look, choose a shade that is a bit lighter than your lip color.  If you have dark red lips, use translucent lip-gloss with a reddish shade.  For dark coffee-colored lips, use light brown lip-gloss.  It is enough to just apply lip-gloss on the center of the lips; not necessary to pay attention to lip corners and outer line.

It is important to choose a lip shade that is suitable for your skin tone.  Hence people with different skin tones are suitable for different types of lip shades.  Fair ladies can use pink or bright red shades.  Tanned ladies can use orange or light brown shades.

Tip 1:  Deep cleansing
Lips must be thoroughly cleansed of makeup and dirt.  I recommend Shu Uemura’s cleansing oil.  It removes makeup completely and leaves your skin super clean.  After removing all makeup, wash face with water.  Do this step twice to ensure all traces of makeup are gone!

Tip 2:  Regular use of lip balm
If you want baby-smooth tender lips, I strongly recommend this great product – Kiehl’s Lip Balm #1 with SPF15 (Kiehl's号护).  Apply this onto lips before your lipstick.  It provides sun block and prevents fine lines too!

Tip 3:  Hot mask
Using Kiehl's lip balm or Vaseline, apply a thick layer onto lips.  Cut out a piece of clear plastic wrap () to fit the shape of your mouth and then stick it onto lips.  Then press a hot towel against lips.  Remove plastic wrap after a while and discover your lips are amazingly smoother.  Alternatively, apply a very thick layer of lip balm before sleep and you will find your lips dewy soft the next morning!

Tip 4:  Maintain your lip color
I believe that as long as you put in effort to maintain and care, you will get nice attractive lips.  I heard of some people applying eye cream in place of lip balm but I advise against this.  Furthermore, you may swallow the eye cream unknowingly!

Tip 5:  Take care of your lips at all times
If you don’t have any lip problem, apply hot mask once or twice a month is enough.  However lip balm is a daily necessity and must always be applied and every time before you apply or re-apply lipstick.  In addition, be gentle when wiping your mouth or removing lipstick as the skin surrounding the mouth corners are very delicate and peels easily.  Never use toilet paper to wipe, use soft tissue instead.  Also, don’t keep licking your lips when they’re dry, it will make them dryer!  For dry flaking lips, dip a cotton bud into hot water and apply on the flaking areas.  Wait 2 to 3 seconds for it to cool down.  Then gently scrap the flaking skin off.

My experience:
I had once applied pearl powder onto my lips and the results were not bad.  Put a small amount of pearl powder onto your palm.  Mix it with plenty of lip balm and apply onto lips.  Lips will be considerably whitened!
