Chapter 2: 100% Perfect Hair - Part 2

Baby Hair and 7 rules for Healthy Hair

Some people have lots of baby hair along their hair line.  I am one of them.  They are natural and nice-looking hence I don’t advocate shaving them off.  Many artists have theirs shaved off upon the stylists’ advice.  However the new hairs will grow back stiff and spiky!  It is really not necessary to bother so much about your hair, healthy and natural is beautiful.  Besides proper washing and not subjecting it to perm and colouring treatments, it is important to be aware that how we lead our lives have an impact on the health of our hair.

My atrociously ridiculous tips for maintaining healthy hair!

Tip 1:  Keep a safe distance
I don’t let my hair come into contact with anything.  For example when I’m sitting down, I will flip my hair to the front before I sit back.  Never will I allow it to be sandwiched between my back and the backrest which will cause damaging friction!

Tip 2:  Avoid pressing on hair
When traveling in a car, I will always ensure that my hair rest on top of the seat belt, instead of being pressed underneath it.  Also making sure the seatbelt doesn’t rub against my hair!

Tip 3:  No physical contact
When watching TV at home, I will flip my hair to the front to avoid it rubbing against the sofa!

Tip 4:  Lift up your hair before sleep
If your hair is of a considerable length, you must lift it up over your head before sleeping.  Never sandwich it between you and the pillow.  Otherwise, your hair will get tangles and become very dry – the results of your hair rubbing against the pillow!

Tip 5:  Don’t even touch my hair
When my boyfriend wants to put his hand on my shoulder, I will lift my hair up before he can do so.  This sounds abnormal but this is how I protect my hair!

Tip 6:  Don’t tie ponytail
I seldom wear my hair in a ponytail at home because it will cause hair loss to the front hair line.  Wearing hair bands does that too!

Tip 7:  Let your hair down
At home, I will always let my hair down, divide them into two portions, flip them to the front and let them drape over my chest.  The weight will be equally balanced for both portions.  If not, more hair loss will occur on the side bearing heavier weight.

Frankly speaking, I seldom go for hair treatments at salons and prefer DIY.  I dislike the way hair stylists wash your hair.  They usually cause more damage and hair loss than when you DIY at home.

MOISTURIZE YOUR HAIR

Tip 1:  Apply conditioner on hair strands only, never on the scalp.

Tip 2:  Apply conditioner on hair strands from the ears downwards.  The portion above the ears does not require conditioning.  Conditioning the whole head makes your hair heavier!

Tip 3:  Smooth conditioner evenly over hair strands.  Rinse off when you see the conditioner has absorbed into your hair.

Smart Ways to Blow-Dry Hair

Many people feel that it is not necessary to blow dry hair, but I believe that it is not really good, because if we allow hair to dry naturally, the hair texture will become flat and collapse easily in the long run.  The strands become finer, weak and drop off easily.  If you believe that blow-drying hair will damage hair ends, then at least you should blow-dry your scalp!  Personally, I always blow-dry my hair after every wash and ensure it is completely dry before I’m done!

I have a few blow dryers for different purposes.  One blows with a constant temperature () which won’t scald my precious scalp.  This is my favorite blow dryer because whenever I hover it over a certain area of my head for too long, it gives out a warning by emitting a red light that tells me the temperature is getting high and I should move the dryer away.  It ‘thinks’ for its owner!

I have another dryer with ‘special powers’.  It has a brush on top of the air barrel, enabling combing and drying simultaneously.  Hair becomes straight and shiny with no frizz.  I love it!

Tip 1:  Moisturize hair
When hair is slightly damp, I will apply a hair serum (片液) which contains a lecithin ingredient (卵磷脂).  No particular brand to recommend but currently I’m using REDKEN.  Only 2 or 3 drops are needed on hair ends and voila, hair instantly becomes soft and smooth!

Tip 2:  Hair needs to avoid the sun too
Whenever I go out under the blazing sun, I will shade myself with an umbrella to avoid my hair getting burnt!  I will also wear an Iron Mask Visor (面人遮) for extra protection!
Tip 3:  Trim off split ends
It is necessary to trim off all your split ends or else they will remain there for as long as you allow them to!  No worries - take care of your hair well and you won’t suffer from split ends again.

Tip 4:  Consume natural healthy foods that are good for hair
Eating kelp () and black sesame improves hair texture.  I have been eating kelp everyday since high school.

Tip 5:  Avoid hair coloring
It causes extreme damage and dryness to hair.  But if you have natural curls that need straightening without affecting the hair texture, try this:  dye your hair dark after straightening!  A majority of shampoo ad models actually have their hair colored dark.  Dark blue or purple colors make hair look shiny and dark.

Tip 6:  Say bye bye to mousse and hair wax
I never use mousse and wax on my hair.  These styling products contain alcohol.  Daily use will cause severe hair loss and breakage!

Tip 7:  Tie your hair this way to avoid hair loss
It is easiest to tie long hair into a ponytail.  The current popular trend of tying one is: Gather your hair high and tie them loosely.  Then use a sharp tail comb or hand to form bumps to create a westernized look.  This also causes lesser damage to hair.  However when tying ponytails, the hair in front will inevitably be pulled back and tied too tightly, causing hair fall.  My idea is:  Have a professional hair stylist to trim those hairs in front shorter and a bit layered.  Hence they won’t get tied into the ponytail!

Use a proper elastic band to tie your hair.  Never use those square-shaped (four-sided) rubber bands meant for common use.  They grip your hair and break the strands easily.  Use those colorful rubber bands that are flat and shiny, they are very good in tying small ponytails.  If you need to tie a full ponytail, it is better to use a cylindrical elastic band.

Tip 8:  Faster hair growth
If you suffer from hair loss or simply wish your hair would grow faster, try SHISEIDO Live Act Hair Tonic (『不老林』).  Apply to scalp to stimulate quicker and thicker growth.  You can also use a shampoo with seaweed and ginger extract (海藻生姜洗).  It helps in quicker hair growth but makes hair quite dry too.  Just remember to apply more conditioner afterwards.

If you have sensitive scalp or dandruff problems, besides using over the counter products, I can only advise you to seek professional help!
